Towers Dormitory & Hooping: Where Mountaineer Memories Were Made

If you lived at Towers Dormitory back in the day, you already know—it wasn't just a place to sleep. It was where friendships were formed, stories were created, and some of the best college memories happened.

For many of us, life at Towers revolved around one thing after classes were over: the basketball courts.

There was something special about walking outside and seeing a game already in progress. Students from every corner of campus would gather around the courts. You never knew who was going to show up next. Some days it was just students looking to get a few games in. Other days, a few of the WVU basketball players, especially the freshmen, would come out ready to get some work in.

That instantly changed the atmosphere.

Every pickup game became an opportunity to see how your skills stacked up against Division I talent. Every possession mattered. Every basket meant something. As students, we all wanted to measure ourselves against the guys wearing the Flying WV.

Back then, there wasn't social media to post highlights or livestream your crossover. Your reputation was built right there on the blacktop. If you could hold your own against the basketball players, people remembered it.

And yes...it didn't hurt that plenty of women were hanging around watching the games.

Let's be honest—that added a little extra motivation.

Everybody wanted to look good on the court. You wanted to hit the game-winning jumper, throw the perfect pass, or lock someone down on defense. Playing well earned respect among your friends and definitely got you a little extra attention from the ladies. Looking back now, it's funny how seriously we took those pickup games, but those moments made college life unforgettable.

One memory that has always stayed with me was meeting a top freshman coming to WVU during our freshman year at Towers.

Word had spread around campus about this big man from Washington, D.C. Everyone talked about him before many of us even saw him play. Then one day, there he was on the court.

I had never seen someone his size handle the basketball like that in person.

He wasn't just a big guy. He could dribble, move, and make plays in ways that completely changed how I looked at the game. Watching him play—and getting the chance to hang around with him—was one of those experiences that sticks with you forever.

Those days at Towers were about much more than basketball.

It was about community.

It was about meeting people from different cities and backgrounds who all became part of your Mountaineer family. It was about friendly competition, laughter, conversations that lasted late into the night, and memories that still make you smile decades later.

Today's students have their own traditions and experiences, but for those of us who called Towers home or the place to be during that era before the internet, the basketball courts will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Those pickup games weren't just games.

They were where confidence was built, friendships were formed, and lifelong memories were created.

As I think back on those days, I realize it wasn't about who won or lost.

It was about being young, being surrounded by great people, and enjoying every moment of the Mountaineer experience.

Those are memories I'll never forget.

Were you part of the Towers basketball scene? I'd love to hear your stories. Who do you remember playing with? Which games still stand out in your mind? Share your memories in the comments and help us celebrate another unforgettable chapter of WVU history.
